You’ve just received a stunning floral arrangement — whether it’s a surprise delivery, a gift to yourself, or a centerpiece from an event — and you want it to last as long as possible. With a little care, you can enjoy those blooms for days longer.
As soon as you get your flowers home, trim the stems at an angle under running water. This opens up the water channels and helps them drink more efficiently.
Bacteria is the enemy of fresh flowers. Rinse your vase with soap and hot water before filling it with room-temperature water. Add any provided flower food, or make your own with a tiny pinch of sugar and a drop of bleach.
Fresh water keeps blooms perky. When you change the water, trim the stems again to encourage hydration.
Keep your arrangement away from direct sunlight, heating vents, or ripening fruit (yes, fruit releases ethylene gas that speeds up wilting).
Dead flowers release bacteria into the water. Removing them early helps the rest of your arrangement last longer.
Bonus Tip: If you have roses, gently peel away the outermost petals (“guard petals”) to reveal fresh layers underneath for an instantly revived look.
